Bittersweet

In the comments of the 60 Minutes episode (that we watched in class) someone wrote in the comments that Guddu's death was bittersweet.

What do you think that means? Explain how his death could be seen as bittersweet. Also, tell me if you agree or not. Do you think there is any relevance to this person's comment?

PLEASE RESPOND IN AT LEAST FIVE SENTENCES!

Family Tree

Today, you are going to create a family tree for Saroo. I am not going to tell you who needs to be on this tree but I should see at least ten people, including Saroo, on the tree. Think of parents, grandparents, and siblings. Follow Mrs. Carn's directions closely.

When you are finished please put the image of your family tree on your blog and name it "Family Tree". You don't need any other writing on this tree.

Text Message from Mum and Dad

After Saroo's visit with his biological mother he sent this message to his Mum and Dad:

"The questions I wanted answered have been answered. There are no more dead ends. My family is true and genuine, as we are in Australia. My mother has thank you, Mum and Dad, for bringing me up. My brother and sister and mum understand that you and Dad are my family, and they don't want to intervene in any way. They are happy just knowing that I'm alive, and that's all they want. I hope you know that you guys are first with me, which will never change. Love you." (162).

Now, it's your turn. Please respond as if you were Saroo's Australian Mum or Dad (not both).
What would you say to your adopted son in response to his text?

Please utilize the website: http://iphonefaketext.com/

Create a response to follow this text that you received from your son. Your response should be no less than five sentences in length. I would like for you to have Saroo respond at least once. Then, download the image of the text message and upload it to your blog. That is the only item needed on your blog post besides the title "Text Message from Mum or Dad".

A Mother's Message

What do you think Saroo's biological mother initially said to him when she first saw him?

Using Google translate - create a message in Hindi and post below. Please make sure the post is at least five sentences.

For extra credit, have someone get onto your blog and translate the message!
If you do NOT want the extra credit - please provide the translation on your blog as well!

Mrs. Carn's Example:

Translation:
I have missed you my son. You have always been on my mind and in my heart. I know it is you, Dear Saroo. I love you. My son, I have missed you. I am so glad that you are alive.

Guddu's Perspective

For this blog post, please write a personal narrative from the perspective of Guddu. We don't really know what happened on the night Saroo was lost. Explain what happened from the viewpoint of Saroo's older brother. This is a time that you can get creative! Please write this entry in no less than 10 sentences.

Also, include a picture of what Guddu may have looked like (remember he was 14 years old). I used a picture of Guddu from the movie - as there are no actual photos of him.

Mrs. Carn's Example:

The night Sheru became lost was the most terrifying night of my life...for many reasons.  I left Sheru hoping to find work and then to return before sunrise. I came across a man named Anjali who needed help loading goods onto his storage truck intended for transport by morning. He promised me a little money and some leftover food he had for dinner. I immediately accepted. I worked for a good three hours and I was utterly exhausted - having not slept since the previous night. He gave me a few rupees and a half eaten loaf of bread. I took a bite out of the bread and decided to save the rest for Sheru. I knew I needed to get back. Sheru was a tough little kid but he would eventually get restless and agitated...and I didn't want him to wander. I picked up my pace - as I was a good twenty minutes away from the train station - because I wanted to get back as soon as possible. But I was so tired...my eyes were itchy and my bones were sore. As a ran across the set of tracks to get to my brother I suddenly tripped and fell. My foot became wedged between the rails. I couldn't move and the bright lights of an oncoming train were ahead. I struggled and fought to get myself up...but I just couldn't...the next thing I knew a piercing sound was screaming in my ears and all I saw was...darkness.

Mandala

For this post, please insert the image of your mandala. After you have inserted your image please write a descriptive paragraph concerning Saroo and his mandala. Explain what his mandala would represent in no less than five sentences.

Mrs. Carn's Example:

Saroo's mandala may represent multiple different aspects of his life. I feel it would be centered around the idea of family. I think the various colors would represent hope. The different shapes and designs would represent different aspects of his identity - being both Indian and Australian. The overall design, may also showcase both the struggles and successes Saroo has achieved within his life.

Saroo's New Life in Australia

For this blog post, you need to explain what it is like for Saroo in his new life in Australia through quotes. Find five sections in the book that explain a different way of life for Saroo than what he lived in India. Include an image for each event, a quote, and the page number from the book.

Mrs. Carn's Example:

“And we still did plenty of things together as a family - we would go to a restaurant every Friday as a family outing, and we took trips away during school holidays. The World Expo 88, held in Brisbane, was the first event of its kind I had ever been to. I saw Pakistan’s tallest man the unbelievable monorail, which took people to different stations representing areas of the world. Mum and Dad had a two-day family visit pass and it was the most amazing place I had ever seen” (97).

Connection

Saroo's adopted parents took him to the movies to see a Hindi film called Salaam Bombay.

"It's images of a little boy trying to survive alone in a sprawling city, in the hope of returning to his mother, brought back disturbing memories so sharply that I wept in the dark cinema, my well-meaning parents unaware of the cause." (5)

Is this an experience that you have had as well at one time in your life? Has a movie or a piece of music affected you emotionally due to the memories attached to the movie/song or the ideas present?

Please pick one movie or song that has had a positive or negative affect on you while you listen or watch due to memories or experiences that you have tied to that movie/song.

Your Task:

1. Insert Movie/Song from YouTube
2. Write about what they Movie/Song is about in a 5 sentence paragraph. Pretend I have never seen/heard it before.
3. Write about the emotional connection you have to that Movie/Song in a 5 sentence paragraph.
